It needs a little modifications, I could do them some weekend, I only
need to get an idea of how to interact with the splash program, but I'm
sure it will not take too much.

That one is a splash implementation itself, so it's a lot more complex
compared to what we need to make updates to the status of a splash
daemon.

The svn code is far from a release, and has some bugs, so I think you
should go for the current stable.
BTW, Having distros running the current initng could help to fix our
lack of developers (yeah, I'm lonely :P), so a new release could come
faster...
