Good question. I have no idea why those are used, maybe someone can
point out the historical reason...

IMO, no suffixes/prefixes should be used, except for typedefs where
it's desirable to add a _t suffix. Typedefs should be used only when
defining opaque types (we don't do that way now, but we should).

I will add this to the docs later.
